Planning: The Australia borders are open. The Easter holidays are approaching. It is time to hit the road for another long walking adventure. Another Australian Camino!
Looking for an opportunity to explore a new stretch of coastline I hit upon what cold be a wonderful combination of ‘cafe life’ and ‘wilderness’. A long walk down the South Australian coast from Adelaide to the famous, or infamous, Maslin Beach followed by two short sections of the equally famous Heysen Trail.

While Google Maps predicts a journey of just under 100km – I know that the reality will be quite different!. The Fitbit will reveal the truth but I will put in an estimate now that we will traverse at least 120km of this part of the world before slumping into a car and driving back tot he airport to return home.
Packing
We will be staying in hotels or hostels along the way so our packing can be relatively light – at about 8-10kgs, depending on the state of the water bottles. Plenty of thought has gone into what to take, and weeding out the unnecessary items. Given that we will rarely be far from a chemist or supermarket, the need to take things ‘just in case’ is hardly there. So the focus has been on comfortable clothes, weather protections and entertainment.
The Plan
Our itinerary is roughly mapped out, but a few overnight stays have been left open to allow us to go with the flow!
- Friday 2 April: Arrive at Adelaide airport in the morning. Turn left to West Beach. Overnight at Brighton.
- Saturday 3 April – Monday 5 April: Cover all the ground between Brighton and Myponga Lodge, home to Heysen Trail walkers.
- Tuesday 6 April: Trek Section 7 and 6 of the Heysen Trail. Arrive sweaty and exhausted in Victor Harbour.
- Wednesday 7 April: Drive back to Adelaide and Fly home.
The Updates
Not sure how easy it will be to post photos and commentary on the road, but I will try. I am only taking my Samsung phone, and have never quite got the hang of typing at length on such a tiny screen. Sign up to my blog to receive the updates as they come.
