The Natural History Museum

Walloton Hall is a grand estate in the outskirts of Nottingham. Started in 1580, it took 8 years to build, and has been a home, burnt, abandonded, deserted, rebuilt and finally purchased by Nottingham City Council to become the Natural History Museum in 1925.

Entry to the Museum is free, but the parking cost $12.20 – so they get you either way.

The impressive entrance to Walloton Hall.

The home has been reconfigured to house an impressive collection of taxidermied animals and interesting annecdoates about the history and  formation of the natural world.

Our second stop was a little bit further South-West of Walloton and another cave dwelling.  This time the home was less renovated,  to visit and open to the elements.

By the time we walked back diwn the hill to the car, we were getting decidedly peckish and headed to Derby in search of warm food. We found a little pub, the Exeter Arms, and settled in with the locals for a pint and a hot meal. Unfortunately we were too focussed on wating to take any photos.

With our generous portions of Christmas fare mostly finished, we headed back to Jane’s to get ready for Christmas Carols at St Mary’s Church, followed by mulled wine.

Service finished, we scurried back to Jane’s again for a late supper and bubbles.

Tomorrow, we head back to Birmingham.
