Leicester and Christmas Shopping Chaos

Monday 23 December 2024

We spent the morning with my Aunt Jane setting up and decorating the Christmas Tree. An engineering wonder, with colour coded arms that attach to the central pole.

We had a last cuddle and then hit the road to make our way back to Birmingham.  We decided that we would make at least one stop and Leicester to see something of Richard III would be in order. I wasn’t sure if Olivia knew about the 2012 discovery.

Jane: Do you know about the incident of Richard III in the carpark?

Olivia: Did they have cars back then?

No, but you can find out what they did have here. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/how-did-englands-lost-king-end-up-beneath-a-parking-lot

We easily found the RIII Information Centre. While we were looking perniciously at the ticket information, 11.50 each! ouch, a very helpful and informative woman advised us that it looked too much and it would be cheaper to buy online.  Or better still, drop over the road to the Guildhall Museum, which is free and next door in the Cathedral which is where RIII is now permanently interred.

The Guildhall

Our walk around the Guildhall was very informative about the development of trades and professions in the area. The hall, built in 1390, was home to many things over the centuries; including a library, court, and a theatre – rumoured to have hosted performances by Shakespeare.

There were thirteen stained glass windows in all to reflect the agricultural months.

Having ticked off the cultural requirements for the day, we headed to the shops for last-minute gifts and drove the final 75 minutes back to Birmingham in the rain.

Unexciting domestic chores of packing and cleaning filled our evening, so we perked ourselves up by watching the first half of Troy. There is nothing like the trio of young Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, and Eric Bana to get you ready for bed.

Tomorrow, we head for the big smoke.
