Arriving

We arrived in Oslo at 6:30am having spent the previous 6 hours on the overnight bus from Flam. We managed to get some rest, but it stopped at least 20 times and this didn’t make for an easy trip.  We paid a little bit extra to have the ‘better’ seats which gave us more width and leg room.

We were both feeling the effects and we hurled on our packs and headed to MacDonalds for breakfast.  There are some 7am’s in your life when a degree of certainty is needed. Even if that certainty is bad coffee and bad burgers.

We finally located our hotel, but as the room was not going to be ready until 12, we left our bags and headed out to examine the city.

The Palace

The Palace from the main boulevard

We explored the streets closest to our hotel, trying to get our bearnings in this city of very windy streets.  Most other citys we visited have experienced multiple major fires over the centuries, and this has provided the opportunity to revise and modernise the layout.  Not so here.  Frequently we found ourselves turning back on ourselves.

The cafes (but later in the day when everyone was out of bed)
Sculpture in the Grounds of the Palace. I think she must be the patronsaint of female travellers.

The Palace grounds have been open to the public for hundreds of years and provided a nice place to lie down and rest. We were impressed by the number of sculptures that appear across the city.

More old buildings
Not quite umbrellas, I think they were going for the colourful seaweed look!
Fortifications and city walls.

Tuesday 22 July

Today we decided to explore on our own.  Debbie was keen to check out the Art Galleries and National Museum while I was planning on catching up on my paperwork and then visiting the Kon Tiki and Maritime Museum.

The Kon Tiki Museum was fascinating, and included a 15 minute documentary about Thor Hyerdahl and his sucessful crossing of the Pacific and the later unsuccessful attempt to cross the Altantic.

It wasn’t easy to photograph the exhibit so you will have to use your imagination or google.

The Maritime Museum has a resident boat builder, currently working on recreating a clinker built Viking boat.

We met up in the late afternoon and explored some more.  This time, the waterfront, the Opera House and more unusual sculptures.

One more sleep, and then we head south to Goteborg to meet up with Olivia for the next instalment of our Scandinavian adventure.
