Easter Sunday in Rome

Sunday 5 April 2026

Illness and a crowded city were enough incentive for us to stay in bed; coughing, sneezing and spluttering.  We didn’t leave home until just before 1pm. Our first stop was a closed bakery.

Tomb of Eurysaces the Baker

This rather impressive tomb wasn’t constructed for an important or noble man but a baker.  This interesting part of it is the wikihow instructions on the sides, showing the step by step process of making bread.

Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano

Yes, another big cathederal – but this one was especially important on a day when the Pope was out and about and Iran have said they will make tourist destinations a target.

This Catherderal has the “Sweating Cenotaph”. This stone memorial to Pope Sylvester II is said to sweat profusely (more even that Andrew Mountbatten) when the death of the Pope is imminent.

Oliva checked – and it seemed OK – so she pronounced Pope Leo safe for another day.

As you can imagine, security around Rome was very tight and police tape designed to keep dangerous terrorists out of paved areas was everywhere.  I thought it would be good to get some!

The Colloseum and Circus Maximus

What more can I say.  It is big and you have to book months ahead to get inside.  We settled for lunch on a ledge with a pretty impressive view of the stadium.

According to Google, it cost between $380 million and $1 billion in today’s money to build and was funded by the destruction of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.

Circus Maximus! Just saying.

No Roman holiday is complete without a Vespa Museum visit.

In the basement of the Bici and Baci Vespa shop, they have a free permanent museum, displaying vintage models from the 1950’s to 1965.

Gregory Peck (swoon – and also for Atticus) and Audrey Hepburn made the Vespa famous in “Roman Holiday”.

Unlike so many other vehicles seeking fame through fashion, it was nice to see that the design is almost unchanged since the Vespa was first introduced.

Fontana delle Tartarughe

Another fountain, but this one was inspiring because we were thinking about waxing our legs, and  his guy seemed to have some suggestions.
